Lazarus Art Peak
Eddie being Malachi’s (Lazarus) safe space is something we are really looking to lean into over the coming issues. Eddie is his “guy in the chair” and helps him make sense of the world he’s been thrust into. When Malachi is lost, it’s usually Eddie that helps him see the way.
After 15 years on the job, Lazarus is a finely oiled machine. He is accustomed to making fairly light work of lower-level incarnations of sin and this LUST demon is exception.
We really wanted to keep things gritty and dark when it comes to the action scenes. This isn’t an easy job and the toll it takes on Lazarus is a heavy one. Making sure we showed the carnage of his fights without going overboard is a fine line but it’s one that we want to walk.
Joey Cabral did such an amazing job designing Lust. The writhing arms all over the demon acting as different parts of its face and body is amazing. In just a few panels you see the hands as the demon’s mouth and an extra set of limbs that respond to the demon’s needs. So cool!
I’ve never been a fan of the veteran hero that just KNOWS everything about his world. With Lazarus, we really wanted to lean into the idea that despite being very good at his job, and having done it for a handful of years, the different worlds he walks in are just too vast and too old for him to absorb everything. Things surprise him all the time. He’s learning on the job even after 15 years and in this scene, he’s struggling to find answers. This is where Eddie becomes integral to his mission Lazarus and a Lust demon lock eyes before a fight!
Our hero, Lazarus in an absolutely stunning piece by Joey Lee Cabral. I love this design so much and the sword on his back just makes me happy. If you’ve got a keen eye, you’ll spot some concept art and an exceptionally cool 3D print sculpted by Pez Lopez, and painted by myself. Look out for those, you might see them pop up in one of the Kickstarter tiers!
